Toronto and York Region Métis Council’s Rendezvous for Canada’s 150th
Start date: 9 September, 2017
End date: 9 September, 2017
This event will be a celebration of one of Canada's distinct Indigenous peoples, the Métis, and their extensive contributions in the establishment of Canada. Historically, Métis people and communities would gather together at certain times of the year to meet, or Rendezvous, in a celebration of their culture, including their musical, dance, gaming, and culinary traditions. The Métis were central facilitators of the fur trade, and so barter and trading, critical components of this exchange, will be included in the Rendezvous through a Métis goods and vendor market. Our First Nations and Inuit brothers and sisters will be represented at this community gathering in the form of cultural programming, games, and vendors. The Rendezvous will act as a medium through which cultural knowledges may be shared and will offer all attendees the opportunity to participate in and learn about an Indigenous form of community gathering!
Nature of the Project Reach
This project will be the Toronto and York region's first-ever Métis Rendezvous. It will engage Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members across the GTA and attract those from neighbouring cities.
With this project we hope to help strengthen Métis people’s connections to their roots, increase the general public's understanding of one of Canada's distinct Indigenous People, celebrate the Métis Nation and its citizens, and, in the spirit of reconciliation, bridge communities.
Community sponsors are welcome to work with us to bring this large-scale event into fruition.
