The First World War: Vimy Remembered event is an interactive experience that commemorates the 100th anniversary of this pivotal moment during the Great War and the formation of Canadian identity.
Nature of the Project Reach
The First World War: Vimy Remembered will commemorate the impacts and history of the Great War, with a focus on the Battle of Vimy Ridge. This event will inspire participants to learn more about this crucial battle and commemorate its 100th anniversary, and gain a deeper understanding of the role the Battle of Vimy Ridge played in the formation of Canadian identity. As a hands-on, multiple activity station, public event that will offer inclusive engagement opportunities for a variety of audiences, participants will be encouraged to interact with reenactors, experience different aspects of military life, and have the opportunity to see a World War One battle reenactment. The First World War: Vimy Remembered, will be a highlight during Fanshawe Pioneer Village's year long celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017, and will support Fanshawe Pioneer Village’s 2017 interpretive theme: ‘A Century of Identity’. This initiative is made possible by the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaboration between The London Community Foundation, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge played a pivotal role in the formation of a shared Canadian identity. The
First World War: Vimy Remembered will share this important Canadian historical contribution with our communities through living history demonstrations and inspire a deeper understanding of this Canadian milestone.
