Supporting Urban Agriculture - A Community Garden Expansion
Start date: 1 April, 2017
End date: 1 November, 2017
In collaboration with the City of Barrie and other community stakeholders will be developing a new community garden project that will address food access and animation of this community space through education, social and youth programming as well as employment opportunities for vulnerable citizens.
Nature of the Project Reach
This initiative will make a difference to our community as it sets the stage for further collaboration of municipal and community partners working toward a more fulsome urban agriculture strategy and increased community food security.
The project is a collaboration of community partners to create a community garden that will be universally available to the community. It will engage a diversity of residents including vulnerable populations and youth. The project goals include: to engage community participation in the garden; to provide a space for social inclusion and a sense of community; to increase access to locally grown food and support food security; increase opportunities to increase knowledge and learn food skills; provide purposeful volunteer and dignified employment opportunities.
