Supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education in Underserved Communities Across Huronia
Start date: 6 September, 2016
End date: 30 June, 2017
Our project will provide 18 complimentary STEM education enrichment workshops to Huronia schools during the 2016-17 school year. These schools will be in communities that are traditionally underserved due to their location in a low-income neighbourhood, rural area, or First Nations community.
Nature of the Project Reach
Our project will directly impact 486 local children and youth, along with 18 teachers and 45 parent volunteers.
Too often, children in underserved communities do not have access to enriching educational field trips and opportunities; either because similar programs are unable to reach First Nations Reserves, rural areas, or because the schools or parents cannot afford the cost of such programs.
At Scientists in School, we want these children to have access to the same opportunities, to dream big, and think about a career or future that they may have never thought was possible until they had Scientists in School. Teacher testimonials highlight the impact we have on young lives in the classroom:
“This was my first experience with Scientists in School and it was amazing! Our presenter had the students active and engaged in many experiments which helped them to understand many concepts. The simplicity of the equipment used gave me lots of ideas as well. The whole afternoon flew by and the students loved every minute of it. I would highly recommend this experience for any school!”

“Scientists in School was an extremely valuable and educational program for my students. They were engaged and on-topic throughout, and with all the supplies that the presenter brought, they were able to learn through hands-on activities that I would not normally be able to provide. Their knowledge of the concepts of this unit became very thorough in just a half-day workshop. I wish I could have Scientists in School for every science unit I teach!”
