"Our Stories” is an interdisciplinary project that has engaged newcomers affiliated with COSTI Immigrant Services, one of the country’s largest immigrant serving agencies, in reflecting on their migration journey to Canada.
In collaboration with local artist Jim Bravo, a new mural was produced on the western-facing wall of COSTI’s Ralph Chiodo Family Immigrant Reception Centre. For many, this project has served as the first platform through which they had the opportunity to share their story and be involved in a community project. As part of our continued commitment to artist capacity building, we employed Public Art Assistant Stephanie Bellefleur on this work.
The new mural will serve as a backdrop for a myriad of cultural and recreational activities as it faces a local park and schoolyard, with programming already underway in celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary. Such performances provide an opportunity to share what being a newcomer to Canada means to the participants, enhancing understanding among the diverse community, while promoting the wide breadth of people and places that continue to shape Canada.
Nature of the Project Reach
This project aims to reach newcomers, youth and children and community members in the surrounding area.
To engage community members and residents of the Ralph Chiodo Family Immigrant Reception Centre in community-informed art and contributing to the shape of their community through art.
