Greentree School Accessible Playground
Start date: 1 October, 2016
End date: 31 August, 2017
The Town of Drumheller doesn't have an accessible playground. It is much needed for our community. Children of all abilities should be able to play. An inclusive playground incorporates accessible features intermingling with regular play structures so that children of all abilities can play inclusively together. It incorporates sensory experiences as well for children of all developmental abilities and needs. Greentree Elementary School is the perfect place for such a playground, and it will be a great place for social, physical, and cognitive development for all children. Our school playground is important not only during school hours but also as a social and recreational gathering space for a wider community.
Nature of the Project Reach
Greentree Elementary School serves as the designated public elementary school for families in the community of Drumheller. Drumheller has a population of nearly 8,500 with over 1300 children aged 0-14 (2011 census data). The Town of Drumheller also serves many hamlets, villages, and farming communities in the surrounding area. Our school serves approximately 470 students, including children with various disabilities. The playground is also publicly available outside of school hours. Drumheller is also a major tourist destination, and having an accessible playground will give tourists affected by mobility challenges a place to play.
Our goal is to create a new accessible (inclusive) playground for the Drumheller and area community. The accessible playground will meet the varying needs of all ages, physical, and developemental abilities. This will better serve all students at Greentree Elementary School, and will be open to the public. It will be Drumheller's only accessible playground, therefore will benefit the entire community greatly.
We are still in need of funds to complete the project. We'd love to collaborate with other members in order to acquire further funds for this accessible playground.
