Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region - Go Girls! Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds
Start date: 10 October, 2016
End date: 26 June, 2017
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region (BBBSWR) would like to use the funds to expand our Go Girls! program to the Township of Woolwich.
Go Girls! is a group mentoring program for girls ages 12-14 and provides them with information to help make informed choices about healthy, active living and supports them in dealing with the emotional, social and cultural issues they may face. The goal of the program is that participants have a positive body image, high self-esteem, healthy eating habits, be physically active and able to create and maintain healthy relationships.
By proving girls in the Township of Woolwich with an opportunity to participate in Go Girls! we believe this will strengthen their relationships and provide them with a greater sense of belonging to the community. We know there is an identified need for more programming in the Township of Woolwich and our community partners/local schools have identified Go Girls! as a program that can meet the needs of girls living in Woolwich.
The program is facilitated by screened volunteers who have been trained by BBBSWR professional casework staff. Each Go Girls! group has approximately 10 girls in attendance and is led by 2 volunteer Mentors. The organization’s professional casework staff provide ongoing support to volunteers, children and families throughout their time in the program.
Go Girls! consists of 7 mentoring sessions, held over a 7-10 week period within school facilities during school hours or in local community centres in the evening. Each 2 hour-long session is loosely structured around four themes: physical activity, healthy eating, self-esteem, and communication skills.
