Eliminating Barriers Program
Start date: 1 March, 2017
End date: 22 December, 2017
Many schools will be holding events to mark Canada’s 150th, whether in school or as field trips with influential speakers.
Many of these trips come with a cost to the students' families. Yet in Halton, one in ten students come from low income households. Many do not have the means to have a proper meal, or winter clothing, or the funds to participate in field trips.
HLF works to eliminate financial barriers to help encourage student participation in school events and build a vibrant and healthy community for all. Participating in Canada’s 150th is no exception.
Burlington received 22 refugees into the school system in 2016, and 9.3% of children live at or below the poverty line. HLF has received a 32% increase in requests for the Eliminating Barrier Program within the five months of the school year, in comparison to 2016. The need is there. Every student deserves an equal chance to learn and participate in school-related trips and events to celebrate Canada's 150th.
Nature of the Project Reach
This program is specifically for Burlington students in the HDSB.
At least twelve students-in-need will be able to participate in class and school trips to learn about Canada's culture, heritage, and sense of community to celebrate its 150th, when they otherwise would not have the financial means to do so.
