Composition by James Wright featuring Al Purdy text
Start date: 3 October, 2016
End date: 14 May, 2017
Our project is to commission a four part (SATB) choral piece by Ottawa composer James Wright using text by the great Canadian poet, and during his lifetime, Prince Edward County resident Al Purdy. This piece would be part of an all Canadian program presented by Command Performance Community Choir (of Prince Edward County) and the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers (of the Ottawa region) in Ottawa and Picton in May of 2017. Altogether there would be 70 - 80 singers participating in these concerts, and it would be a tremendous opportunity to showcase Canadian composition and music performance.
Nature of the Project Reach
The project initially will reach the communities of Prince Edward County and Ottawa through shared rehearsal and performance, but a successful music composition of this nature could be performed frequently nationally and even globally.
The project is intended to enhance appreciation of the contributions made to Canadian culture by the poet Al Purdy, and the tremendous positive musical compositions given to Canada by composer James Wright, while at the same time bringing together people in the Ottawa and Prince Edward County communities to celebrate Canada’s 150th in the positive joy of singing.
