Our goal is to provide challenging and fun curriculum, balancing show skills with students. We are committed to ensuring all students are experiencing a variety of genres and artists in their musical journey, while learning key skills on their instruments and stretching their musical abilities. Our intention is to continue to provide a wide range of musical genres, challenge, team building and leadership for all participants.
Canada Rocks Eh!
At the start of the 1990s Canadian rock took a distinctive turn. Thanks to the CRTC and 'CanCon', radio stations would have to play 35% Canadian content. This led to an explosion of Canadian bands ruling the Canadian airwaves unlike any era before, and it's continued ever since…this program celebrates the surge of Canadian bands that started in the 90s and continues today!
This program will include everything from I Mother Earth and Big Sugar to Billy Talent and Simple Plan to Metric and Death From Above 1979. The variety in this program will provide lots of opportunities for all students to learn everything from grunge to electronic to alternative music! A tribute to the Tragically Hip will be a big part of this show, and of course - we'll need to throw a couple other classics in the show that you would expect in a Canadian show! This will be a fun show and a great way to celebrate our Canadian culture!
Here are some features by instrument of this exciting show:
Guitar – Canadian rock has a number of great guitar players and this program will showcase them to our students. These musicians will show students the importance of the guitar and its part in many classic Canadian songs. From crazy effects, crucnhy heavy riffs, melodic lines and innovative techniques, students will the have the opportunity to learn from these artists who all have a unique Canadian flavour to their sound.
Bass – Bass players around the world know of the amazing talent that comes from Canada. Students of this program will discover how their part not only adds and enriches the music, but also has a melody line all on its own. Bass students will strive to bridge the sounds of the guitar and the drums in order to add a sense of fullness to these Canadian rock anthems.
Drums – Home to one of the best drummers of all time, Canada has created some incredible music with equally incredible drum parts. In this program, students will learn to be part of the song and listen to how their parts interact with the other instruments. They will learn the rhythms and fills created in these Canadian songs, all while staying in the pocket and keeping a steady meter.
Keys - With many modern alt bands embracing electronic sounds, keys will have a prominent role in this program - cool effects, ambience, and killer melodies that drive the song will all be part of this program!
Vocals - Over the years, Canada has produced some of the most iconic voices in rock music. Both female and male artists have fronted amazing Canadian bands whose voices have helped to shape the musical landscape. These voices will push students to new heights as they take on both classic rock anthems and more recent modern and electronic rock hits.
We'd love to have community members join us in the celebration. There is an opportunity to showcase "birthday" items such as cupcakes, etc. Or just come out and enjoy the show!
