The Canada 150 ~ Island Festival is a one-day special event and outdoor festival designed to celebrate the 150th birthday of Canada while showcasing the diversity of the city of Oshawa and the Region of Durham. The spectacular festival will draw from the rich and diverse culture of Jamaica, while celebrating the place many Jamaicans now call home, Canada. Activities include: music, dance, drumming, fresh food market place, craft displays, food demonstration, and a live concert. The festival is not only created for entertainment, fun and excitement it will be an island experience designed for the entire family. The festival will feature a diverse group of performers such as local and international musical artist, dancers, deejays and other artistic performances. It will be held Saturday July 22, 2017 at Memorial Park, Oshawa. The festival will attract not only people from the Jamaican community, but anyone who enjoys the sounds and tastes of the islands.
Nature of the Project Reach
The Canadian Jamaican Club of Oshawa, prides itself on the work it has done for many years within the Durham Region and in the local municipality of Oshawa. As the club continues to grow and evolve with the changing tides of society events such as Canada 150 ~ Island Style are needed as part of the organization. An organization which strives to ensure solidarity and oneness within the community. The motto "many cultures, one people" is similar to the motto of Jamaica based on the understanding that all people from all walks of life are stronger together than apart.
The goal of Canada 150~Island Festival is to provide a celebration showcasing the Canada’s rich culture and the contributions Jamaican Canadians have made. The festival will be designed to “Show our pride in being Canadian”.
