Building Community through Pollinator Gardens
Start date: 1 July, 2016
End date: 1 October, 2017
This project will seek to embody the cultural stories that we have about our foods in beautiful gardens across Peterborough. The goal of these gardens will be to support one of the most vulnerable and integral components of our food system – pollinators.
The development and stewardship of these gardens will be volunteer-led, and will engage a diversity of community members, including those who are connected through partner organizations such as the New Canadians Centre, local faith groups, and area schools.
Nature of the Project Reach
Pollinator gardens will be developed in local neighbourhoods, for the enjoyment of the Peterborough community.
Through this project, GreenUP, in partnership with Peterborough Pollinators, will build 100 sq. ft. of pollinator gardens in local neighbourhoods. We will also hold a work-bee as part of the garden development process. This work-bee will increase environmental literacy, provide the technical expertise necessary to grow and care for pollinator habitats, and will be an opportunity where we can share our stories and build the social bonds necessary to sustain these physical spaces.
