Books for Elementary School Students
Start date: 23 February, 2017
End date: 23 February, 2017
High school students from HTHS will visit their feeder elementary school (grade 4 classroom) and deliver a gift of books. They will also read to those students and deliver a short writing exercise.
Nature of the Project Reach
It is easy to talk about being an engaged activist citizen, but make150work is an excellent opportunity for high school students to work with elementary school students on literacy skills. They showed grade 4 students how cool it is to read, and to enjoy the art of writing and creating. Moreover, many of these high school students did not attend school last year. These teenagers have worked hard to get back on track and are paying it forward by contributing to younger students in their community. Judging from our success, the future is in good hands.
High school students will role model dramatic reading so that grade 4 students will be encouraged to read to younger students. These high school students will prepare a literacy lesson for grade 4 students. They will do a dramatic reading from "We are in a book" by Mo Willems for the entire grade 4 class. Then the high school students will break the grade 4 class into groups of four or five. They will conduct a enthusiastic discussion with the grade 4 students and introduce them to a writing exercise.
Our project required children's literature. We purchased a number of books and a few books for younger children so that the grade 4 class could then read to grade 2s.
