Black History Month Drum & Dance Festival
Start date: 4 February, 2017
End date: 5 February, 2017
Victoria African and Caribbean Cultural Society (VACCS) has chosen the month of February to join all Canadians in celebrating our Nation's 150th Anniversary. In 2017, Black History Month (BHM) will be launched with a spectacular and participatory Drum and Dance Festival called ''BHM Drum & Dance Fest 150''.
Many cultures around the world have used drumming and dancing as means of communications for centuries. The drum is the oldest known instrument in the world dating back some 4,000 BC. A drum festival is a most fitting way to mark and celebrate Canada's cultural mosaic and 150th anniversary.
Nature of the Project Reach
We carry out our mandate primarily through events, which are always founded on collaborations with local artists and organizations. At VACCS events, art meets food; before our non-profit incorporation in September, 2012, we organized monthly Afro-Caribbean community buffet dinners, starting in December, 2011. Our organization structure is made up of 4 Board of Directors representing 3 regions in Africa and 1 Caribbean representative.
