A Celebration of Caring
Start date: 1 March, 2017
End date: 17 June, 2017
A Celebration of Caring is a picnic with activities that celebrate being Canadian, it honors those who strengthen our community by giving back and encourages all those who attend to reflect on
what it is to be Canadian.
Nature of the Project Reach
We are committed to mentoring children. In this role it is important that we demonstrate good citizenship and that we seek opportunities with the volunteer mentors, children and the families we serve to celebrate what it is to be Canadian. This event ensures inclusivity and reminds us all that regardless of our culture, income levels, age or sexual orientation we are part of a larger family defined by the borders of our country.
A celebration of Caring is a picnic in one of Victoria’s beautiful parks. The park has a central location and is easily accessible. The picnic will host free activities accommodating the more than 400 families we serve 53% of whom struggle with poverty. The event will include a BBQ and refreshments including a Canada’s 150th Anniversary cake.
Participants will enjoy a host of Canadian themed activities including canoe rides, aboriginal crafts, old time relays and event stations hosting activities themed for each Canadian Province. These stations will feature an activity educating the participant about the Province.
This event is also an opportunity to thank the more than 500 Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteers who demonstrate weekly a compassion for community and genuine caring for children. Our goal through this event is to celebrate being Canadian, to honor those who strengthen our community by giving back, to share new experiences with all those who attend and allow them to reflect on what it is to be Canadian
