150+ Reasons We Love Canada - Toronto
Start date: 1 December, 2016
End date: 31 December, 2017
To acknowledge Canada’s 150th birthday on July 1st, 2017, VIBE Arts is collaborating with youth and communities across Canada to create 60 public murals as part of our ‘150+ Reasons We Love Canada’ project. The ‘plus’ sign holds dual meaning in that it refers to Canadians having more than ‘150 reasons’ why they love Canada, and, most importantly it acknowledges the Indigenous Peoples that are the original occupants of our nation’s land.
Over 500 children and youth aged 10-29 across Canada are coming together to create the 60 original hand-painted murals, each 6 feet by 4 feet. The murals are being produced by youth in every province and territory in free workshops facilitated by local professional artists in schools, shelters, social service agencies, hospitals, detention centers and libraries.
In Toronto, we will be partnering with 15 schools/community organizations including Youth Without Shelter, Albion Boys and Girls Club, Gosford Public School and the Yorkwoods and Fairview Toronto Public Library branches.
You can take part by sharing your own reasons why you love Canada at 150reasons.ca to inspire the themes youth explore in their murals.
The 150+ Reasons We Love Canada project creates a unique opportunity to engage newcomer and marginalized youth in reflection, dialogue, and artistic expression about the aspects of Canada that they find important. The 150+ Reasons We Love Canada project is essentially a national storytelling project set to provoke meaningful dialogue among young Canadians through mural art. It’s about capturing the stories- artfully- of what makes our country great and allowing our young people to be the visual storytellers. “Reasons Why” range from our: “Two official languages”; to our “Joie de Vie”; to “Freedom to Be Who You Are”; “Our 4 Seasons”; Our “National Parks and Coastlines”; “Our Diversity”; “Peace”; and our freedom to have “Open minds, open hearts, and Open Spaces”.
Nature of the Project Reach
The mural panels will touch the lives of millions of Canadians underground, on the ground, and, above ground. Through innovative partnerships, VIBE Arts will display the murals in their original state in over 20 subway stations in Toronto, at ground level in digital form in airports across Canada, shopping malls, and in our skylines on 306 large-format digital billboards. Thereafter, the murals will be returned to the communities where they were created as a lasting legacy that will mark the spirited voices of our young people on Canada’s milestone year.
Youth leadership and engagement is central to this project. Canada’s next generation of community builders and creators need to have their voices forefront in representing what is important about the country they live in.
